Acquired from a private collector, this hard to find hand decorated cloth doll was originally commissioned and sold by J.B. Sheppard & Co., an upscale department store located in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
in the late 19th Century. She measures between 20 and 21 inches long. Each one of these hand made creations is a unique piece of American Folk Art history. This beautiful child, which could be either a boy or a girl, has a firm pressed and oil painted stockinette head with painted brown hair, big brown eyes in defined, sculpted sockets, arched eyebrows, accented nostrils, wonderful stitched ears, and pursed lips. The stockinette body has oil cloth painted lower limbs, and is stitch-jointed. There is some crazing on the face, a little wear on the tip of her nose, and some patching and wear on the back of her head, that looks original. There are some small holes in the outer layer of cloth of her body.
She is wearing a
sleeveless
petticoat and
vintage
frock, which is marked Handmade, Philippine, 6 Mo.
This sweet child is in amazing condition at approximately 140 years old!!
