    Description

BRAZIL - JOANNES PR, Shield CS 1809 on XL Reis MARIA I
    1790
    - Copper! @felipe_colecoes
    Brief History
The Shield counterstamp applied in 1809 in Brazil by JOANNES Prince Regent in coins issued before 1799 doubled the host coin value, in this case from 40 Reis to 80 Reis.
This meassure was used to increase the government funds in order to help paying the extremely high costs of maintaining the Portuguese Royal Family and nobility that had escaped from Portugal to Brazil in 1807 (arriving in Brazil in 1808), running away from the iminent Napoleonic invasion in Portugal.
