Description
This has always been one of my favorite fire marks. The original "Green Tree" fire mark issued by the Mutual Assurance Company of Philadelphia, PA. beginning in 1784.The Mutual Assurance Company for Insuring Houses from Loss by Fire in New York was
formed in New York City in 1787.
This mark, I believe was made in 1937 to celebrate the 150th anniversary in New York. However this company
disappeared
after that year.
It is cast lead on a hard wood plaque clearly stamped on the casting and on the back 1937 along with a casting number or possibly the policy number.
The piece is 16" tall x 12" wide and 1 1/4" thick. The mark is attached to the 1" thick beveled board with slot head screws and can be hung by the chain on the back, which I believe is original.
At one time in my life as an antique dealer I did have one of the original "Green Tree" fire marks, they are a real thing of beauty and rareity.
You can see this interesting piece and others in our large display space at Columbia Rivertowne Antique Center, Columbia, PA.
