An original 19th century cast iron plaque, a marker from an insured house front
Detailed, well preserved
relief, featuring a fire hydrant with attached hose in a puddle of water, flanked by the
letters FA for the Fire Association of Philadelphia
Beginning in the 1750's, some American insurance companies issued metal fire marks to policyholders to signify that their property was insured against fire damage.
Serving as an advertisement for the insurance companies, the mark alerted volunteer firefighters that the property was insured.
The Fire Association of Philadelphia was such an insurance company founded in 1817 by a group of 11 volunteer engine companies and 5 volunteer hose companies.

The presented here plaque is an early one, from the first half of the 19th century.
